Spotted
A small, widespread bittern across Asia, named for its yellowish-buff plumage, especially on the underparts. It is commonly found in a variety of wetland habitats.
Where to spot
Rice paddies, freshwater marshes, reedbeds, and even urban parks with water features across Asia, from India to Japan and Southeast Asia.
How to spot
Look for its small size and overall yellowish-buff plumage, with a darker back. Often seen walking slowly through shallow water or dense vegetation, sometimes perched on a lily pad.
When to spot
Year-round. Often seen foraging during daylight hours, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
The Yellow Bittern is a remarkably adaptable species, often seen in cultivated rice paddies and even urban ponds, a stark contrast to many more reclusive bitterns.
