A medium-sized egret found along the coasts of Africa, the Middle East, and India, exhibiting both a dark grey and a white morph.
Where to spot
Coastal areas, rocky shores, mudflats, and estuaries across Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.
How to spot
Look for either the uniform dark grey plumage or the pure white plumage. Often seen actively foraging along the shoreline, chasing small fish.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during low tide when coastal foraging grounds are exposed.
