Spotted
The Pale Batis is a small, active, and less vibrantly colored batis species. It typically has a black mask, white supercilium, and a pale rufous or greyish breast band, making it less conspicuous than some relatives.
Where to spot
Found in Southern Africa, specifically in coastal regions of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Inhabits dense coastal forests, thickets, and riverine woodlands.
How to spot
Search the mid-story and undergrowth of dense coastal forests. Identify by its paler overall coloration compared to other batises, especially the breast band. Listen for its high-pitched, repeated 'chip' calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours.

Like many batises, the Pale Batis often perches quite still for short periods, scanning its surroundings for insect prey before making a quick sally.
