The Cape Batis is a common and charismatic small African songbird, known for its distinctive black mask, white supercilium, and broad black breast band. Females have a chestnut breast band.
Where to spot
Endemic to southern Africa, primarily South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. Found in a wide variety of wooded habitats, from coastal forests to montane forests and suburban gardens.
How to spot
Listen for their characteristic loud 'fweee-fweee-fweeoooo' or 'choo-choo-choo' calls. Look for their striking black and white face pattern and breast band. They are often quite tame in gardens.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day. Often seen during breeding season (spring/summer) when nesting.
Cape Batises are known to be quite aggressive and territorial, fiercely defending their nesting sites from intruders, sometimes even larger birds.
