Spotted
The Senegal Batis is a small, active insectivorous bird found in West Africa. Males have a black mask, white supercilium, and a broad black breast band, while females have a rufous breast band.
Where to spot
Found in West Africa, from Senegal to northern Cameroon. Inhabits dry savannas, acacia woodlands, and gallery forests.
How to spot
Look for them in the mid-story of dry woodlands and savannas. Identify by the black mask, white eyebrow, and breast band. Listen for their sharp, often repeated 'chip' or 'tsip' calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours.
Like many batises, the Senegal Batis is a 'sit-and-wait' predator, patiently observing from a perch before darting out to snatch an insect in mid-air or off a leaf.
