Spotted
The Pririt Batis is a small, active bird of arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Males have a black mask, white supercilium, and a black breast band, while females have a distinctive rufous patch on the wing.
Where to spot
Endemic to dry, arid, and semi-arid regions of southwestern Africa, including Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. Inhabits acacia and mopane woodlands and scrublands.
How to spot
Listen for its soft, often diagnostic 'pririt' calls. Look for its active foraging behavior in thorny bushes and trees. The male's black and white pattern and the female's rufous wing patch are key identifiers.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day.
The 'pririt' in its name likely comes from its characteristic call, which is a soft, often repeated 'pri-rit' or 'pit-pit'.
