The Woodland Pipit is an African pipit species that, as its name suggests, shows a preference for more wooded habitats than many of its relatives. It has a distinctive song.
Where to spot
Southern and East Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. Found in open woodlands, savannas, and along forest edges.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic song, often delivered from a tree perch. Look for it foraging on the ground in relatively open woodlands.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best heard and seen during the breeding season (spring/summer).
