Spotted
The Forest Wagtail is a distinctive wagtail species found in forested areas across Asia, unique among wagtails for its arboreal habits. It constantly bobs its tail, like other wagtails.
Where to spot
Breeds across East Asia (e.g., Siberia, Korea, Japan) and migrates south to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent for winter. Found in moist deciduous and evergreen forests, woodlands, and plantations.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive double breast band and its habit of foraging on branches, often wagging its tail rhythmically. It can be found singly or in small groups. Listen for its sharp calls.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and summer in its breeding grounds, or during autumn and winter in its non-breeding range.

Unlike most wagtails that frequent open ground and water edges, the Forest Wagtail primarily forages on tree branches and in the forest understory.
