Spotted
The Wood Warbler is a vibrant, predominantly yellow-green warbler known for its distinctive vibrating trill song. It is a true forest specialist, preferring mature deciduous woodlands with open understories.
Where to spot
Breeds across temperate Europe and Western Asia in mature deciduous and mixed woodlands, especially those with tall trees and sparse undergrowth. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa.
How to spot
Identify by its bright yellow-green upperparts, pure white underparts (no yellow on belly), and distinct yellowish supercilium. Its most characteristic feature is its accelerating, shimmering trill song, which ends abruptly. It typically forages high in the canopy.
When to spot
Present in breeding grounds from spring (April/May) to late summer (August). Migration periods in spring and autumn offer chances to see them passing through other habitats.

The Wood Warbler's unique 'shimmering' song is delivered with such intensity that the bird's whole body visibly vibrates, a phenomenon known as 'tremelo-singing'.
