Spotted
Radde's Warbler is a robust, relatively large warbler with a plain, rather dull brown plumage, prominent pale supercilium, and a distinctive 'jizz' (general impression, shape, and behavior). It is often skulking in dense vegetation.
Where to spot
Breeds in the taiga and mixed forests of Eastern Asia, including parts of Siberia, Mongolia, and China. Winters in Southeast Asia. It is a rare but regular autumn vagrant to Western Europe.
How to spot
Look for a sturdy, plain brown warbler with a distinct pale supercilium and a short, thick bill. It often holds its tail slightly cocked and flicks its wings. It is typically found low down in dense undergrowth. Listen for its characteristic hard 'chup' or 'tuc' call.
When to spot
In its breeding range, observed during spring and summer. Outside its breeding range, it is primarily seen during autumn migration (October-November) when it can appear in unexpected locations.

Radde's Warbler is named after Gustav Radde, a German naturalist. Despite its somewhat drab appearance, its rarity as a vagrant outside its core range makes it a sought-after bird for twitchers.
