The Wood Duck is a strikingly beautiful dabbling duck found in forested wetlands across North America. Males boast iridescent green, purple, and chestnut plumage, making them one of the most colorful waterfowl species. They are known for their distinctive crested head.

Where to spot

Found throughout much of North America, from southern Canada down to the Gulf Coast and parts of Mexico. They prefer wooded swamps, marshes, beaver ponds, and slow-moving rivers and streams.

How to spot

Look for them swimming quietly in flooded timber or perched on branches overhanging water. Their distinctive calls include a rising 'woo-eek' from females. Binoculars are essential to appreciate their intricate plumage.

When to spot

Year-round in warmer regions; best observed during spring and fall migration in northern parts of their range. Spring to early summer is ideal to see males in vibrant breeding plumage. Early mornings and late evenings are often most active.
