The Common Goldeneye is a medium-sized diving duck named for its striking golden-yellow eyes. Males feature a glossy green-black head with a prominent white circular patch between the eye and the bill, and crisp black and white body plumage.
Where to spot
Breeds in boreal forests across North America, Europe, and Asia, nesting in tree cavities near lakes and rivers. Winters widely across temperate North America, Europe, and Asia on large freshwater lakes, rivers, and coastal marine bays.
How to spot
Look for them on open water bodies, often diving for extended periods. Males are easily identified by their golden eye, green-glossed head, and white facial patch. Females are duller with a chocolate brown head and gray body, but also possess the characteristic golden eye and often a pale neck band.
When to spot
Best observed during migration (spring and autumn) and throughout the winter months when they gather on open water.
