Widespread across Central and South America, from southern Mexico south to northern Argentina. Found in various humid forest types, including lowland rainforests, gallery forests, and montane cloud forests.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, low, booming 'whoo-OOO-whoo' call, often given from within dense foliage. Look carefully in the mid to upper canopy for its grey form, which can be surprisingly camouflaged.
