Spotted
Wilson's Plover is a medium-sized shorebird found along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas. It is known for its relatively thick, heavy bill.
Where to spot
Inhabits sandy beaches, mudflats, and salt marshes along the coasts of North, Central, and South America, particularly the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
How to spot
Scan sandy beaches and coastal mudflats. Its relatively large, thick bill is a key identification feature. Look for it running and stopping to forage near the water's edge.
When to spot
Present year-round in its southern range, with northern populations migrating south for winter. Best observed during daylight hours, often at low tide.
Unlike many other small plovers with delicate bills, Wilson's Plover has a remarkably stout bill, which it uses to crush the shells of small crabs and other hard-shelled invertebrates.
