The Snowy Plover is a small, very pale plover found on sandy beaches and saline flats across parts of North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Its light plumage provides excellent camouflage.
Where to spot
Inhabits sandy beaches, salt flats, and alkali wetlands along coastlines and inland areas of the Americas and Caribbean.
How to spot
Walk slowly along sandy beaches, scanning for small, pale birds that blend in perfectly. Avoid disturbing nesting areas. Its overall pale coloration and small size are key features.
When to spot
Present year-round in its southern range, with northern populations migrating south for winter. Best observed during daylight hours, often at low tide.
This species often uses minimal nesting material, laying its eggs in a shallow scrape directly on open sand, relying heavily on camouflage to protect its vulnerable clutch.
