Spotted
The Spur-winged Lapwing is a medium-sized wader instantly recognizable by its black crown, white underparts, and the prominent yellow spur on its wing. It is widespread across parts of Africa and the Middle East.
Where to spot
Common in open habitats near water, including wetlands, cultivated fields, and grasslands, across sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Turkey.
How to spot
Look in open, grassy, or muddy areas, especially near water. Their loud, sharp calls ('did-he-do-it') are often heard. The black cap, white underparts, and yellow legs are key identification features.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round throughout its extensive range. Most active during the day, often seen foraging in open areas.

True to its name, this lapwing possesses a sharp, bony spur on the bend of its wing, which it uses as a defensive weapon against predators, particularly when protecting its nest or chicks.
