Spotted
The Island Thrush (*Turdus poliocephalus*) is an extraordinarily widespread and polytypic species found across numerous islands in the Indo-Pacific. It exhibits immense variation in plumage, but is generally dark with a yellow bill and legs.
Where to spot
Found on islands from Southeast Asia, through the Philippines, Indonesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, to Polynesia. It inhabits a wide range of forest types, from montane cloud forests to coastal scrub.
How to spot
Identification can be challenging due to subspecies variation, but generally look for a dark thrush with a yellow bill foraging on the ground or in low trees. Listening for its varied calls and songs is helpful.
When to spot
Resident year-round throughout its vast island range. Observation times vary locally but are generally best during early mornings and late afternoons when birds are most active.
