Spotted
The White-winged Nightjar is a critically endangered and enigmatic species, recognized by its striking white wing patches prominently displayed in flight. It is a largely nocturnal bird of grasslands and savannas.
Where to spot
Restricted to specific dry grasslands and savannas, primarily in parts of Brazil and Paraguay. Its habitat is highly localized and threatened.
How to spot
Due to its extreme rarity and cryptic nature, observation is exceptionally challenging. It typically requires guided expeditions to known, protected sites. Listening for its unique calls at night is crucial, followed by careful spotlighting.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, it is best observed on moonlit nights when its white wing patches might be visible during flight. It rests motionless during the day.
This species was once thought to be extinct for many decades before its dramatic 'rediscovery' in the 1990s, highlighting its extreme rarity and elusive nature.
