Found from the southwestern United States through Mexico, Central America, and much of South America. Inhabits deserts, scrublands, open woodlands, savannas, and increasingly, urban and suburban areas.
How to spot
Look for their distinctive, fluttering flight pattern against the twilight sky. Listen for their frog-like 'peent' calls. In urban areas, check rooftops for nesting birds or flying overhead.
When to spot
Primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, most active at dusk and dawn. However, they can sometimes be seen in flight during the day, especially on cloudy days.
