Spotted
Rüppell's Chat is a distinctive species of East Africa, named after the German naturalist Eduard Rüppell. Males have a black head and upperparts with a white patch on the shoulder, and rufous underparts.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, including Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia, inhabiting arid and semi-arid scrubland, acacia savanna, and rocky hills.
How to spot
Look for it perched prominently on the tops of bushes or low trees in dry, open country. Its black, white, and rufous pattern, especially the shoulder patch, is a key identifier. Listen for its short, scratchy song.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the breeding season (typically during or after rains) when males are more vocal and display.
This chat often perches on the very tops of acacia trees or other prominent bushes, making it relatively easy to spot in its open, arid habitat.
