The White-throated Magpie-Jay is a striking, long-tailed jay species endemic to western Mexico and northern Central America. It is characterized by its vibrant blue and black plumage, a long crest, and a prominent white throat. These highly social birds move in noisy flocks through open woodlands and scrub.
Where to spot
Found in western Mexico, from Jalisco south to Oaxaca, and extending into parts of northern Central America. It inhabits arid and semi-arid deciduous forests, thorn scrub, and riparian woodlands, often near human habitation.
How to spot
Look for noisy flocks moving through woodlands or across open areas. Its striking blue and black plumage, long crest, exceptionally long tail, and distinctive white throat are unmistakable. Listen for its loud, raucous calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range, observable year-round. Most active during the day, particularly early mornings and late afternoons.
