Where to spot
Inhabits large rivers, lakes, and associated wetlands in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly around the Congo Basin and other major river systems.
How to spot
Look along sandy or muddy banks of large rivers and lakes. Its size and bold white head make it conspicuous. Listen for its loud, ringing calls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its range. Most active during daylight hours, often seen foraging along the water's edge.
