Spotted
The Alagoas Screech Owl is a newly described and highly localized small owl found in the critically endangered Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil. It is considered critically endangered due to severe habitat loss.
Where to spot
Known from a very small number of fragmented lowland Atlantic Forest remnants in Alagoas and Pernambuco states, northeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Due to its extreme rarity and restricted range, observation is very challenging and typically requires expert guidance in its specific, isolated habitats. Listen for its unique vocalizations.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Best observed by listening for its calls at night, particularly during the breeding season. Visual sightings are exceedingly rare.
