Where to spot
Lowland tropical rainforests and gallery forests along rivers and streams in Central Africa (from Nigeria to Democratic Republic of Congo).
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, low 'hooo-hooo' call. Spotting is challenging in its dense habitat; focus on branches overhanging water where it might be waiting for prey.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Best observed by listening for its calls from dusk to dawn. Visual sightings are challenging in dense foliage.
Like other fishing owls, it possesses rough scales on the soles of its feet and powerful talons to secure slippery fish prey, showcasing specialized adaptations for its diet.
