The Príncipe Scops Owl is a very recently discovered and critically endangered species, endemic to Príncipe Island in the Gulf of Guinea. It is a rare forest resident facing significant habitat threats.
Where to spot
Endemic to Príncipe Island, São Tomé and Príncipe, primarily found in mature lowland rainforest.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and restricted habitat. Primarily identified by its distinctive, mournful call. Requires dedicated nocturnal searches within the remaining forest on Príncipe.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most vocal from dusk until midnight.
