Spotted
The White-chested Alethe is a rather plain, medium-sized forest bird with olive-brown upperparts and a white chest and throat. It is a shy and elusive inhabitant of dense rainforests.
Where to spot
Found in forests of Central and East Africa, from Cameroon to Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. It prefers dense undergrowth in lowland and montane rainforests.
How to spot
Patience is essential. Look for subtle movements in the dense undergrowth on the forest floor. Listen for its clear, whistled calls, which are often far-carrying and can help pinpoint its location.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon when it is foraging on the forest floor. More vocal during breeding season.
Alethes are known for their secretive nature, often staying hidden in the dense undergrowth. Their presence is more often revealed by their distinctive calls than by visual sightings.
