Spotted
The Violet-backed Hyliota is a beautiful and distinct species found in Central Africa, recognizable by the iridescent violet sheen on its dark upperparts. It is a canopy-dwelling insectivore.
Where to spot
Found in Central Africa, including parts of Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, and Gabon, inhabiting moist lowland and gallery forests.
How to spot
Scan the mid to upper canopy of dense forests. Look for flashes of violet as it moves through the leaves. Listen for its high-pitched calls, which can be hard to pinpoint in the forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, particularly in the mornings, when sunlight might reveal its iridescent colors.
The violet iridescence on its back is structural coloration, meaning it changes with the angle of light, giving the bird a shimmering appearance in good sunlight.
