Spotted
The Great Elaenia is a remarkably large and robust elaenia, making it one of the largest members of its genus. It inhabits humid montane forests and forest edges.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests of the Santa Marta Mountains in northern Colombia.
How to spot
Look for its notably large size and robust build compared to other elaenias. It often perches conspicuously on branches, making deliberate sallies for insects. Listen for its deep, emphatic calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round within its restricted montane range. Active throughout the day, often seen foraging in the mid-story and subcanopy.

Its imposing size, for an elaenia, makes it stand out from its smaller relatives, and it often has a more deliberate foraging style.
