The Turquoise-browed Motmot is one of the most recognizable motmots, famous for its brilliant turquoise brow and black mask, set against a green body. It is often seen perching conspicuously in open areas of Central America.
Where to spot
Widespread from southeastern Mexico through Central America to Costa Rica. Common in open woodlands, savannas, cultivated areas, gardens, and archaeological sites.
How to spot
Look for its vibrant plumage and iconic racquet tail as it perches prominently on wires, fences, or low branches. Listen for its distinctive, hooting 'mot-mot' call. It often swings its tail like a pendulum.
When to spot
Resident year-round throughout its range. Active during the day, particularly in the mornings and late afternoons. Highly vocal, especially during the breeding season.
