Spotted
The Tody Motmot is the smallest and arguably one of the most unique motmots, found in the humid forests of Central America. It combines the delicate features of a tody with the distinct tail of a motmot, though without the bare racquets.
Where to spot
Found in humid evergreen forests from southern Mexico through Central America to northern Honduras. It typically inhabits the forest understory and middle canopy.
How to spot
This is a shy and elusive bird, often difficult to spot. Listen for its distinctive, low-pitched hooting calls. Look for it perching motionless in the dense forest understory, often near streams or ravines.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, particularly at dawn and dusk. Its calls can be heard throughout the day.

Unlike most motmots that swing their tails, the Tody Motmot's shorter tail lacks the bare racquets and is typically held still, making it a unique member of its family.
