Spotted
The Andean Motmot is a large and striking motmot found in the humid montane forests of the Andes. It features brilliant green plumage, a black mask, and a distinctive turquoise crown, typically with racquet-tipped tail feathers.
Where to spot
Distributed along the Andes mountains from Venezuela and Colombia south to Peru and Bolivia. Inhabits humid montane forests, cloud forests, and subtropical forests at higher elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, resonant hooting calls, which can be quite loud. Look for it perching quietly in the mid-canopy or understory, often along forest edges or near clearings. Its large size and distinctive crown are helpful for identification.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its highland habitat. Most active during the day, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons. Its calls are a good way to locate it.
