The Rufous Motmot is a large and conspicuous motmot found in the lowland rainforests of Central and South America. Its vibrant rufous-orange plumage contrasting with a green back and tail makes it easily identifiable.
Where to spot
Widespread from Honduras south through Central America to parts of the Amazon Basin in South America. Inhabits humid lowland rainforests, forest edges, and mature secondary growth.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic deep, hooting call, often described as 'hoop-hoop'. Look for its bold rufous plumage as it perches motionless in the forest understory or mid-story. Its large size and colorful bill are good features to look for.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day. Its distinctive calls are often heard at dawn and dusk, but also throughout the day.
