Spotted
The Keel-billed Motmot is a unique and distinctive motmot found in the humid lowland forests of Central America. It is notable for its unusually broad and deep bill, which gives it its name, along with its colorful green plumage and racquet-tipped tail.
Where to spot
Found from southeastern Mexico south through Central America to northern Costa Rica. Inhabits humid evergreen forests, usually in the mid-story or understory.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic low hooting calls, often sounding like 'whoo-whoop'. Look for it perched quietly and patiently on branches within the forest. Its unique bill is a key identification feature, along with its racquet tail.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day. Its calls are typically heard in the early mornings and late afternoons.
Its distinctive bill shape is adapted for catching large insects and small vertebrates, and it often sits motionless for long periods, waiting for prey to pass by.
