How to spot
Look for them clinging to rocks or diving in turbulent coastal waters or fast-flowing rivers. Males are unmistakable with their unique 'harlequin' pattern. Females are dark brownish-grey with distinct white spots on the face (one large round spot at the base of the bill and another behind the eye).
When to spot
Best observed in winter along rocky coastlines, or during the breeding season on pristine mountain rivers (requires more effort).
