Spotted
The Highland Tinamou is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird found in the high-altitude forests of the Andes. Its cryptic plumage of browns and grays provides excellent camouflage within the dense forest understory, making it a challenging species to spot.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests, cloud forests, and elfin forests in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and possibly northern Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen carefully for their deep, haunting calls, which are the most reliable way to locate them. Move slowly and quietly through the forest, scanning the leaf litter and dense vegetation. Being in areas with less human disturbance increases chances of a visual encounter.
When to spot
Primarily active at dawn and dusk, though they can be heard calling throughout the day. Observable year-round in their habitat.

Like other tinamous, the Highland Tinamou's eggs are often glossy and brightly colored, ranging from turquoise to chocolate brown, and are laid in shallow depressions on the forest floor, often in communal nests.
