Spotted
The Great Tinamou is a large, cryptically colored ground bird widespread throughout the lowland tropical forests of Central and South America. Its mottled brown and gray plumage allows it to blend seamlessly with the forest floor, making it more often heard than seen.
Where to spot
Lowland tropical rainforests and moist evergreen forests from southern Mexico through Central America and across much of the Amazon basin in South America.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic call to locate the bird. Walk slowly and quietly along forest trails, scanning the leaf litter ahead. They are very shy and will often freeze or run before flying. Patience and stillness are key to a successful sighting.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon hours. Can be observed year-round.
