A distinctive whistling thrush characterized by its rich chestnut back. It inhabits montane forests in Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Montane forests of Vietnam and Laos, often near streams or damp areas.
How to spot
Listen for its varied, often mournful whistling song. It is quite shy, often foraging on the ground or on low perches.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal at dawn and dusk.
The chestnut color of its back provides excellent camouflage against the forest floor and tree bark in its habitat.
