Black Redstart
Where to spot
Widespread across Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Often found in rocky slopes, urban areas, industrial sites, and open woodlands, favoring sparse vegetation and exposed perches.
How to spot
Look for them perched prominently on buildings, rocks, or bare branches, constantly flicking their rusty tail. The male's dark body and bright orange tail are distinctive; females are duller grey-brown with a similar tail.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in some parts of its range where it is resident. Migratory populations are best seen during breeding season (April-August) and migration (March-April, September-October).

Black Redstarts are remarkably adaptable, often nesting in industrial areas, ruins, and even power stations, showing a strong affinity for man-made structures as substitutes for natural cliffs.
