Spotted
The Blue-and-white Flycatcher is a striking passerine bird, with males displaying brilliant blue upperparts and contrasting white underparts. Females are duller, often brownish.
Where to spot
Breeds in East Asia (Japan, Korea, China, Russia) and migrates south to winter in Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indochina). Inhabits broadleaf forests and woodland.
How to spot
Look for the male's unmistakable blue and white pattern. It often perches upright on branches, sallying out to catch insects in flight. Listen for its short, soft, whistled song.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration periods in transit countries, and during summer in breeding grounds or winter in non-breeding grounds. Active throughout the day.

This species is a long-distance migrant, undertaking impressive journeys between its breeding grounds in East Asia and its wintering grounds in Southeast Asia. Its precise migratory routes are still a subject of study.
