The Sulawesi Hornbill is a medium-sized hornbill endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Males are characterized by their predominantly black plumage, a pale bill, and a unique, relatively small, deep red casque. Females are similar but with a black bill and casque.
Where to spot
Endemic to Sulawesi and some nearby smaller islands (e.g., Muna, Buton) in Indonesia. Inhabits primary lowland evergreen forests.
How to spot
Look for its overall black plumage and the male's unique red casque. The female's black bill and casque are also distinctive. Listen for its rather quiet, soft cackling or grunting calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day, often seen foraging in the mid-canopy or flying between trees, typically in pairs or small groups.
