The Great Hornbill is a magnificent and one of the largest hornbills found in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is characterized by its largely black and white plumage, a massive yellow and black casque, and impressive wing beats that produce a distinct sound in flight.
Where to spot
Found in the Indian subcontinent (India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh) and Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia). Inhabits dense evergreen and deciduous forests.
How to spot
Look for its immense size, black and white plumage, and the strikingly large yellow and black casque. Listen for its deep, resonant 'du-du-du' calls and the powerful, rushing sound of its wings in flight.
