Where to spot
Found in the Indian subcontinent (India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh) and Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia). Inhabits dense evergreen and deciduous forests.
How to spot
Look for its immense size, black and white plumage, and the strikingly large yellow and black casque. Listen for its deep, resonant 'du-du-du' calls and the powerful, rushing sound of its wings in flight.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its forest habitat. Active during daylight hours, often seen in pairs or small family groups, flying over the canopy or foraging in large fruit trees.

Great Hornbills have a remarkable nesting strategy: the female seals herself inside a tree cavity with mud and droppings, leaving only a narrow slit, through which the male feeds her and the chicks for several months.
