Spotted
The Samar Hornbill is a medium-sized hornbill endemic to the eastern Visayan islands of the Philippines. It is characterized by its glossy black body, a rufous head and underparts, and a pale bill with black markings.
Where to spot
Endemic to the islands of Samar, Leyte, Bohol, and Dinagat in the Philippines. Inhabits primary and mature secondary lowland evergreen forests.
How to spot
Look for its black body, rufous head and underparts, and pale bill with black markings. Its specific island distribution helps differentiate it. Listen for its characteristic rhythmic calls, similar to 'tarictic'.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day, often seen in pairs or small groups foraging in fruit trees.
Like other tarictic hornbills, the Samar Hornbill creates a mud seal to nest in tree cavities, and the male is solely responsible for feeding the female and chicks through a small slit during the incubation period.
