Where to spot
Found in the Indian subcontinent, primarily in India and parts of Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. Inhabits moist deciduous and evergreen forests, often near water bodies.
How to spot
Look for its large size, striking black and white plumage, and the large yellow and black bill with a casque. Listen for its loud, raucous calls, which are a series of cackles and grunts.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day, often seen flying in pairs or small flocks over the canopy or foraging in large fruit trees.
Malabar Pied Hornbills are known for their impressive aerial displays during the breeding season, where males engage in elaborate courtship flights and mock aerial combat to attract mates.
