Spotted
The Blue-banded Kingfisher is a striking species native to Southeast Asia, named for the prominent blue band across its breast, contrasting with a rufous belly and deep blue upperparts. It is a forest stream specialist.
Where to spot
Found in parts of Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Inhabits clear, undisturbed forest streams and small rivers.
How to spot
Look for it perching motionless on low branches overhanging secluded forest streams. Its brilliant colors can be hard to spot in dense foliage, but a patient wait might reveal it. Its quiet nature requires careful approach.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day. Best observed in the dry season when water levels are lower and visibility improves.
