Where to spot
Widespread across northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Inhabits clear, still or slow-moving water bodies such as small streams, ponds, lagoons, and mangroves.
How to spot
Look for a tiny flash of blue as it darts low over the water or perches quietly on overhanging vegetation. Its bright white underparts are often visible against the darker water. Listen for its high-pitched 'seet' or 'chit' calls.

Despite its diminutive size, it is a fearless hunter, capable of catching fish almost as large as itself. It often perches on reeds or low branches over very shallow water.
