Where to spot
Subtropical montane forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in southern Ecuador and northern Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive series of hooting calls. Patience and careful scanning of dense mid-level forest canopy are required to spot this small, camouflaged owl.
When to spot
Primarily diurnal, active during the day. Most vocal at dawn and dusk, when it is most likely to be heard and seen.
