Spotted
The Dusky Eagle Owl is a large, dark owl found in open woodlands and plantations across South and Southeast Asia. It is known for its prominent ear tufts and deep orange eyes.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia, favoring open woodlands, groves of trees, and large gardens.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, resonant 'hoo-hoo-hoo' call. Look for it roosting in dense foliage of large trees during the day, as it can be remarkably well camouflaged.
When to spot
Nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn. Can sometimes be seen roosting in dense foliage during the day, making it challenging to spot.
Unlike many fish owls that frequent aquatic habitats, the Dusky Eagle Owl has feathered feet and primarily hunts small mammals and birds, rather than fish, indicating a different foraging strategy.
