Spotted
The Stripe-backed Antwren is a small, distinctive antwren characterized by prominent streaking on its back and underparts. It inhabits the mid-story of humid foothill and montane forests.
Where to spot
Eastern slope of the Andes, from northern Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru, and into northwestern Bolivia.
How to spot
Search in the mid-story of humid montane cloud forests and foothill forests. It often joins mixed-species flocks. Its bold striped plumage aids in identification if a clear view is obtained.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. Best observed in the early morning when foraging activity is at its peak.
Despite its common name, the 'long tail' (longicauda) is not particularly emphasized in field guides; instead, its striking striped pattern is the most notable feature for identification.
