The Paliated Antshrike is a robust and secretive antshrike, characterized by its subtly marked plumage and often strong sexual dimorphism. It inhabits the understory of humid forests.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth of humid lowland and foothill evergreen forests, often in vine tangles or bamboo, across parts of western Amazonia (Peru, Bolivia, Brazil).
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating 'whit-whit-whit-whit' call. Scan the dense understory patiently, watching for subtle movements. They can be very difficult to see in thick cover.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. Calls are an important way to locate them.
