The Striated Caracara is a robust and highly adaptable raptor found in the Falkland Islands and parts of Tierra del Fuego. Known for its curious and bold nature, it often interacts with humans and scavenges readily.
Where to spot
Coastal areas, open grasslands, and rocky shorelines of the Falkland Islands and southern Patagonia (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and Chile).
How to spot
Look for its dark plumage heavily streaked with pale markings on the breast and back, orange legs, and orange-yellow facial skin. Often seen walking on the ground, scavenging, or perching on coastal rocks. Its call is a harsh cackle.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, easily observed. Observable year-round.
This caracara is famously bold and inquisitive, often approaching humans and investigating their belongings, earning it the nickname 'Johnny Rook' from sailors.
